Religion was brought to this region of the country by Alonso de Rangel in 1529.  In ashort period of time he learned Mexican and the main dialect of this place (Otomi), so he started to preach gods word.
He built the first chapel, and it’s walls still in the same place.
Some other important religious people that took care of this ex-convent were: Alonso Urbano and Pedro del Castillo.  Their bodies rest in this cathedral.

This Cathedral looks like a fortress; its front is completely based on Renaissance Art, austere but beautiful.
Many historians do not agree in the beginning year of construction of the Cathedral.
However, 1543 is considered the correct one, and it was finished eleven years later (1554).
It was dedicated to San Jose.  
The architect Juan Antonio de San Juan was the one who buildt this place, but Juan Antonio de Almendra started it.


Triptych:
The Triptych of the Cathedral describes the life of different habitants of the area.  The image of Christ resuscitated emphasize in the center of the paint.  It is also mentioned one of the biggest enigmas in the history of Mexico:  Quetzalcoatl.
Color:  Vivid tones were used, specially red (the color of life).
Forms and figures:  They are figurative for an easier understanding.
Composition:  Geometric figures.
Materials:  Acrylic paints over sheets of red  cedar.

Convent:
It shows examples of Baroque Architecture, constructed in 1759 with pink and gray quarry. 
On the walls of the first floor you can see frescos of anonymous author of the XVI century. 
This is the place of access to the main tower and the chorus.

Chapels:
There are two chapels attached to the temple.  “El Sagrario”, that has a dome and it was built based on Baroque Architecture in 1750.  The other chapel was dedicated to:  Virgen de Guadalupe, built in 1858 and it once served as a side entrance to the church, it has a similar front as the main building.



The Atrium:
Because of its large extension it is an important place. 
In the north entrance it has an arch of the XVII century, and it had to be restored a few years ago.
The impressive Cross is made of quarry, and it symbolizes when missionaries brought Christianity to this place..
