| The city of Tula is located 85km (53 miles) north of Mexico City (about an hour). To get there,
take the 57 Highway (Mexico-Queretaro); There are two exits to go to Tula. The first one is
going by "Refineria", which you'll find when you get to the 60km. And the second one is going
by Tepeji which is located at the 68 km. From both exits to the center of the city usually takes
about 15 minutes (see map). History of Tula: Tula is considered the most important Toltec site in Mexico. Toltecs called it "Tollan" which means: besides or near to the tulle. Tula flourished as a great urban center from AD 900-1200. Founded by Quetzalcoatl around AD 900. At is peak, covered up to 16 sq. km (6 sq. miles) and had an estimated population of 80000 toltec people (synonymous of creation and artistic skills). They were outstanding because of their dedication to their own culture and arts. The Toltec Empire and its capital “Tula”, declined due to many invasions and internal fights, they were destroyed and abandoned by most of the people, however, small groups of people stayed for a while. After that, Tula became into a holy place for the Aztecs. At present, Tula is growing day by day due to the arrival of large industries that are causing a huge development.
